NRC tells Entergy to have new Indian Point sirens up and running by August 24

Washington – The Nuclear Regulatory Commission Monday issued a second order to Entergy requiring it to have its new Indian Point nuclear power plant warning siren system operational by August 24. The company has said it would meet that deadline.
The NRC first issued an order in January 2006 requiring the installation of back-up power for the siren system.
The federal order also requires Entergy to obtain FEMA approval of the new system prior to declaring it operable and declaring it the primary system.
The 2006 NRC order had required Entergy to have the new system operational by January 30, 2007. However, the company was unable to meet that deadline and asked for an extension to April 15. That was approved and two days before the deadline, Entergy sought a second extension, which the NRC denied immediately.
On April 23, the NRC proposed a $130,000 fine on Entergy for failing to meet the terms of the order. Entergy paid the fine and committed to having the system operable by August 24.
